What is being tested?
The at-home gluten intolerance rapid test serves as an initial assessment of a possible gluten-associated immune reaction .
The test detects anti-tTG-IgA antibodies in capillary blood. These antibodies can occur in connection with celiac disease (a gluten-related autoimmune reaction) .
The test is designed as a screening test and provides a preliminary result that should be medically confirmed.
When is the test useful?
The test can be considered if symptoms repeatedly occur after consuming gluten-containing foods , for example:
-
Abdominal pain
-
Flatulence
-
Diarrhea
-
Skin reactions
-
unintentional weight loss
-
Indications of nutrient deficiencies
It serves as an initial guide to whether further medical investigation might be advisable.
Background: Gluten and celiac disease
Gluten is a sticky protein found in wheat, spelt, rye, barley , and in foods made from them, such as bread, pasta, or beer.
In celiac disease, the immune system reacts to gluten with an inflammatory response in the intestine . This can lead to the formation of specific antibodies such as anti-tTG-IgA , which this test detects.
Implementation and evaluation
The test is performed entirely at home and works on the principle of a rapid immunological test .
After taking a small drop of blood from the fingertip, the sample is applied to the test cassette. The result can be read visually within a few minutes .
Result and classification
A positive test result indicates that anti-tTG-IgA antibodies are detectable .
This does not constitute a diagnosis , but it can be a suggestion to seek medical evaluation . A negative result does not necessarily rule out an intolerance.
