What is being investigated?
This test measures bile acids in stool . The analysis allows for an assessment of the interaction of key digestive organs , in particular:
- pancreas
- Small intestine
- Liver and biliary tract
- Large intestine
The measurement can provide indications as to whether bile acids are entering the large intestine in increased quantities .
When is the test useful?
The test can be used for further investigation if symptoms are present that could indicate a bile acid imbalance . Such symptoms can resemble those of irritable bowel syndrome and may include, among other things:
- cramping abdominal pain
- Diarrhea, even independently of food intake or time of day
- Improvement of symptoms on fasting
- visible, floating film of grease in the toilet water
Background information on bile acids
Bile acids play an important role in fat digestion . If they reach the large intestine in increased amounts, this can impair intestinal function and contribute to the aforementioned symptoms.
As a possible consequence , deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins may also occur, since their absorption is linked to functioning fat digestion.
Implementation and classification
The examination is carried out using a stool sample , which is evaluated in the laboratory.
The results serve as a preliminary assessment of bile acid metabolism and the interplay of the digestive organs involved. They do not replace medical diagnosis, but can support further professional evaluation .
