What is being tested?
This test is used for the microscopic detection of worms and worm eggs in the intestines . Parasitological infections occur more frequently after stays in southern countries as well as in tropical or subtropical regions. Contributing factors include hygienic conditions and climatic conditions .
When is the test useful?
A parasitological examination may be considered in the following cases:
- persistent or unclear bowel problems after traveling
- recurring abdominal pain
- Bloating without a clear cause
The test can serve as an initial assessment , especially after stays in regions with an increased risk of infection.
Molecular genetic stool diagnostics are available for the detection of other parasites.
Which parasites are being looked for?
Worms / worm eggs:
Ascaris lumbricoides, Enterobius vermicularis, Hookworm, Strongyloides, Trichuris trichiura, Trichostrongylus, Diphyllobothrium, Hymenolepis, Tapeworms (Taenia saginata, Taenia solium), Clonorchis / Opisthorchis, Fasciola / Fasciolopsis, Schistosoma.
Protozoa (single-celled organisms):
Blastocystis hominis, Giardia lamblia, Endolimax nana, amoebic cysts.
Other single-celled organisms:
Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, Isospora belli.
Implementation and evaluation
The examination is carried out using microscopy and modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining .
The sample is analyzed in the laboratory .
Result and classification
The test result can provide indications of a parasitic infestation .
In case of a positive or unclear result, it is recommended to contact a medical professional for further clarification .
