What is being tested?
The BIOSYNEX Gluten Self-Test is a rapid immunological test for the preliminary assessment of possible celiac disease .
The test detects IgG antibodies against deamidated gliadin peptides (DGP) in capillary blood. These antibodies can occur in connection with a gluten-related autoimmune reaction .
The test serves as a diagnostic guide and does not replace a medical diagnosis.
Why can early clarification be beneficial?
Celiac disease often goes undetected for a long time because the symptoms can be nonspecific or develop gradually. Without proper diagnosis and dietary adjustments, untreated celiac disease can lead to long-term complications .
The self-test allows for a low-threshold initial assessment of whether further medical clarification might be advisable.
When is the test useful?
The test can be considered if symptoms repeatedly occur after consuming gluten-containing foods, for example:
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence
- Diarrhea
- Skin reactions
- unintentional weight loss
- Signs of deficiencies
It is suitable as a screening test , especially if no medical examination has yet taken place.
Implementation and evaluation
The test is performed entirely at home and requires only a small drop of blood from the fingertip.
After applying the sample and the dilution buffer, the result is visually displayed within a few minutes .
Important information on how to conduct the test
- A gluten-free diet for several weeks or months can lead to a decrease in detectable antibodies.
- For the most reliable results, the test should be performed while consuming a gluten-containing diet .
Result and classification
- Positive result: Antibodies that may be associated with celiac disease were detected. Medical evaluation is recommended.
- Negative result: No corresponding antibodies could be detected. This does not rule out other forms of gluten sensitivity .
This test does not detect non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) . There is currently no specific laboratory test for this type of gluten reaction. More information about "non-celiac wheat sensitivity" can be found here .
